The Job Profile Of A Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Depending on the type of industry, there might be slight variations in the job profile of heavy equipment mechanics, but if we take a broader view we can easily relate these professionals with the service and repair of the equipments such as bulldozers, cranes, bucket loaders, wreckers, backhoes, grades, rollers, back rollers, scrapers, etc. For better understanding, let us discuss the job profile of a heavy equipment mechanic in detail.

Work under limited supervision

Heavy equipment mechanics having two to five years of experience are required to carry out all the routine maintenance jobs on their own in accordance with established norms and standards. The most common maintenance jobs that a mechanic may be required to do include the following:

. Carry out the necessary repairs and if needed, replace the damaged or worn parts

. Adjust and maintain engines and their subassemblies such as gear transmissions, crawler heads etc by using hand-held tools, power jacks and cranes

. Regular servicing that includes dismantling and reassembling of heavy equipment with the use of hand tools, jacks, and cranes.

. Test machines and equipment at regular intervals to check whether they are working at optimal efficiencies or not

. Using hands, eyes, ears and standard testing tools such as micrometers and gauges, a heavy equipment mechanic should examine critical parts and components for damage or excessive wear and tear

. Operate the machines themselves in order to point out the exact anomaly and to verify the claims of the regular operator

. Weld broken parts and components using standard tools such as an electric or a gas welder

. Clean parts and components with the prescribed industrial cleaning solvents, using either the direct immersion technique or the spray-paint technique

Other crucial job responsibilities of heavy equipment mechanics

Buying heavy equipment entails huge investments and this is why it becomes necessary to conduct a trial before actually investing in these. Technicians are hired for this purpose who carry out the necessary checks and submit their report to the senior management. Based on the report, the senior management then decides whether or not to opt for that particular piece of equipment.

This makes the job of a heavy equipment mechanic all the more important because now he not only has to deal with routine maintenance jobs but is also required to become a part of the managerial decision making process. However, since such responsibilities also have the potential to create unwanted problems in case something goes terribly wrong, the mechanics should never forget to back up their claims with real-time evidence collected during the trial.

Apart from these, heavy equipment mechanics are also called in to impart theoretical and practical training to new recruits and other employees. Since activities such as maintenance, repair and servicing are a never-ending process and since technologies keep changing, the mechanics are required to continuously hone their skills and keep abreast with the latest developments in their respective domains. It is only then will they be able to perform to the best of their abilities.

Excavator An Commonly Used Heavy Machinery

Excavators are heavy equipment used in civil engineering and surface mining. An excavator, also called a 360-degree excavator or digger, sometimes abbreviated simply to a 360, is an engineering vehicle consisting of a backhoe and cab mounted on a pivot (turntable is a more apt description) atop an undercarriage with tracks or wheels. The term excavator is sometimes used as a general term for any piece of digging equipment.

Roles of Excavators

Excavators are used in many roles:

1- Digging of trenches, holes, foundations
2- Demolition
3- General grading/landscaping
4- Heavy lift, e.g. lifting and placing of pipes
5- River dredging
6- Mining, especially, but not only open-pit mining
7- Brush cutting with hydraulic attachments

Varieties of Excavators

Excavators come in a wide variety of sizes. The smaller ones are called a mini-excavator or compact excavator. One manufacturer’s largest model weighs 84,980 kg (187,360 lb) and has a maximum bucket size of 4.5 m³ (5.9 yd³). The same manufacturer’s smallest mini-excavator weighs 1470 kg (3240 lb), has a maximum bucket size of 0.036 m³ (0.048 yd³) and the width of its tracks can be adjusted to 89 cm (35 inches). Another company makes a mini excavator that will fit through a doorway with tracks that can be adjusted to only 70 cm (28 inches) wide.

Often the bucket can be replaced with other tools like a breaker, a grapple or an auger. Excavators are usually employed together with loaders and bulldozers. Most smaller excavators have a small backfill (or dozer-) blade. It’s a horizontal bulldozer like blade attached to the undercarriage and is used for pushing removed material back into a hole.

Examples of Excavators

1- Compact excavator

A compact hydraulic excavator is a tracked or wheeled vehicle with an approximate operating weight of 6 metric tons (13,228 lbs). It generally includes a standard backfill blade and features independent boom swing. The compact hydraulic excavator is also referred to as a mini excavator.

The compact hydraulic excavator is somewhat unique from other construction equipment in that all movement and functions of the machine are accomplished through the transfer of hydraulic fluid. The compact excavator’s work group and blade are activated by hydraulic fluid acting upon hydraulic cylinders. The excavator’s slew (rotation) and travel functions are also activated by hydraulic fluid powering hydraulic motors.

2- Dragline excavator

Dragline excavation systems are heavy equipment used in civil engineering and surface mining. In civil engineering the smaller types are used for road and port construction. The larger types are used in strip-mining operations to extract coal and these are amongst the largest mobile equipment (not water-borne), and weigh in the vinicity of 2000 metric tonnes, though specimens weighing up to 13,000 metric tonnes have also been constructed.

A dragline bucket system consists of a large bucket which is suspended from a boom (a large truss like structure). The bucket is maneuvered by means of a number of ropes and chains. The hoistrope, powered by large diesel or electric motors, supports the bucket and hoist-coupler assembly from the boom. The dragrope is used to draw the bucket assembly horizontally. By skillful maneuver of the hoist and the dragropes the bucket is controlled for various operations.

3- Bucket-wheel excavator

Bucket-wheel excavators are heavy equipment used in surface mining and civil engineering. The excavation component itself is a large rotating wheel mounted on an arm or boom. On the outer edge of the wheel is a series of scoops or buckets. As the wheel turns, the buckets remove soil or rock from the target area and carry it around to the backside of the wheel, where it falls onto a conveyor, which carries it up the arm toward the main body of the excavator. Additional conveyors then may carry it further; in some cases, several long conveyors are placed end-to-end, each supported by a large vehicular base.

Especially large bucket-wheel excavators, over 200 meters long and up to 100 meters in height, are used in German strip-mining operations, and are the largest earth-movers in the world. These tremendous machines can cost over $100 million, take 5 years to assemble, require 5 people to operate, weigh more than 13,000 tons, and have a theoretical capacity of more than 12,000m³/h. Specifically, the RB293 bucket wheel excavator manufactured by MAN Takraf is recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest land vehicle.

Heavy Machinery – Makes Your Work Easy And Lighter

Heavy machineries are those equipments, which are concerned with large projects. These equipments help to carry out those works that would have been very dangerous and strenuous to perform without big machinery. With the hype of technology taking the world by sweeps, heavy machinery tends to be really efficient and outlast past models. Not only are there durable models but technically sound models that do a perfect job for you.

Heavy machinery should not be operated without the assistance of a licensed controller. They will have special knowledge concerning the running and maintenance of the heavy machinery so that there are no unnecessary accidents or disasters. Even the heavy machinery operators keep the construction sites safe by taking proper care of the heavy machinery. However, rented heavy machinery in affordable prices is also offered for carrying out required constructions.

Types of heavy machinery

Heavy machinery is always used for large scale manufacturing and construction work. The range of machineries include tractors, wheel loaders, track hoes, backhoes, payloaders, dozers, graders, dump trucks, excavators, logging equipments, skidders, skid steers, fellabunchers, freightliner trucks, log loaders, setout trucks, tractor trailers, slashers, low boy trailers, drop deck trailers, flat bed trailers, woodstar Harvester and others.

Almost all the heavy machineries have several parts like blades, backhoes, axle, heads, starters, hoods, radiators, engines, hoses, valves, multiple tanks, bud wheels, seals, clutches, pressure plates, steel frames, chrome bumper, heated mirrors, chrome exhaust, air horns and front/back seats.

Benefits of heavy machinery

The heavy machineries are very advantageous for people using it. Equipped with different modern parts, the machineries can do real fast work. They are durable and flexible. The flexibility in heavy machineries do not mean that they can be transferred from one place to another, but it means that they can used for multiple purposes at the same time. While the small machineries are often lightweight, the heavy machineries are quite heavy and should be installed at a proper place for efficient working systems.

Safety of heavy machinery

The heavy machineries perform a variety of tasks: construction, light transportation of building materials, small demolitions, digging holes, breaking asphalt, paving roads and powering building equipments. But the main thing in using heavy machinery is the safety factor. The heavy machineries should be operated by people who are well conversed in machinery parts and their functions. They should know about the dangers associated and the ways to avoid such situations. Others using the heavy machineries should be aware of different uses of the equipments.

Once you know more about the uses of the different heavy machineries you will be able to use them better and yield efficient results.

Certain Concerns Regarding Heavy Equipment Leasing

Whether you need – a tractor, an earth-mover or bulldozer, erection equipment, an excavator, drilling equipment, other heavy machinery Excavators, Wheeled Excavators, Dozers, Graders, Wheel Loaders, Compactors, Backhoes, Off Road Trucks, Backhoe Loaders, Bulldozers, Crawler Dozers, Shovels, Graders, Excavators, Crushers, Skid Steer Loaders, heavy equipment leasing is an excellent way to grow your business without the significant initial investment and usage of your existing lines of credit. Leasing is faster, requires less of your attention and less upfront money than a bank loan. These days companies also offer immediate write-offs, Balance sheet management, Customized solutions, Solid asset management, improved cash flow, Easy upgrades. Plus, in these economic hard times, it is better to lease heavy equipment then it is to purchase it because of the low resale value the equipment has.

In leasing your heavy equipment, lease payments are tax deductible. Because of that you can have a wide access in your money while traditional loan only offers half of its tax deduction. A typical lease arrangement is for between two and five years. If one is opting for heavy equipment lease, then it might be because of one of the following reasons:

It will give good financial ratio.
Tax benefits as said above.
The total cost ends up in saving money by leasing rather than purchasing.
In case of operating lease, the equipment does not show up on your balance sheet as a liability or an asset.
You have to put up less money initially, when compared to a loan i.e. you will have a lower monthly income.

There are still more concerns which are as:

Make safety also an added concern and take respective measures regarding that in prior.
Get to know the whole details about the heavy equipment lease and any hidden costs.

These days it has become too risky to invest in new equipments. You never know when it will be out of trend. If it all happens then you won’t be in a position to claim your money. And most important, it is a sweat free, simple process.

Serious Construction Site Accidents Could Result From Heavy Machinery Accidents

Heavy machinery poses a unique risk to workers on a construction site. Almost all construction projects, especially larger commercial and residential projects, use large support structures and heavier building materials and heavy machinery is often used to expedite the process of moving and sometimes installing these materials. These machines, while useful, present a unique hazard to construction workers; their convenient nature belies the possibility of serious injury while using them on a construction site.

A few recent examples illustrate the potential hazards posed by heavy machinery. A skid steer, also known as a Bobcat or a front loader, is a common site on construction sites, being used to move large amounts of dirt or other heavy materials. Smaller than a backhoe or other earth-moving machines, it is a useful tool for larger construction sites. The operator of the vehicle could put his coworkers and himself at risk if this machine is used improperly. In three recent cases, these machines were responsible for serious injuries and in two cases a fatality. In Alberta, Canada, two men were working excavating a basement when their skid steer toppled over and pinned them both to the floor. The men were soon rescued by emergency responders and taken to the hospital. In a tragic case here in the United States, a young boy who had gone to work with his father was killed when he fell out of his father’s lap while riding in a skid steer. Preliminary reports indicate that the child was thrown from the vehicle while his father backed up and was subsequently struck on the head by the large bucket full of dirt. In another accident involving a skid steer, a man fell seven stories inside one of the vehicles while participating in demolition work in Chicago.

These small and agile machines are most assuredly not the only vehicles involved in serious construction accidents. While not as common on smaller construction sites, cranes still play a significant role in assisting workers on the job with lifting heavy pieces of building material such as floor joists and beam supports. Crane accidents make up a significant portion of construction accidents. In a recent case in New York, a man was killed when the boom arm of a crane snapped off and crushed the operator as he was working on a bridge. Reports give no clear indication as to what cause the boom to collapse. Crane accidents could be caused by many different factors or malfunctions. In international news, reports of a crane collapse which killed seven men as they worked on a rail line in India were released a few weeks ago.

Often, injured construction site workers seek compensation for their injuries via legal recourse. It is often advisable for any worker or family member of one who has been injured on a construction site to contact an experienced construction accident attorney to develop a construction accident lawsuit as soon as possible.

LegalView.info hosts a wide range of legal resources regarding construction accident. Access to a construction accident lawsuit or contacting a construction accident attorney is simple using their website.
